Pilot Program - Open for Business

How prepared is your business for an unexpected disruption in operation?

Small businesses in downtown Guelph have new resources to help them prepare for disaster-related business interruptions thanks to a pilot project launched May 20th, 2008. The Open for BusinessTM program is made available through a partnership between the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR), The Co-operators and the Downtown Guelph Business Association (DGBA).

All DGBA members will be contacted beginning the week of May 26th to participate in the program - so far we have met with over 30 downtown businesses. We encourage all members to take advantage of this opportunity; Guelph may not be the prime target for a large hurricane, but as we have learned from the unfortunate fire in the Victoria and Gummer buildings, and multiple tornado warnings each year, we are not without our disasters. Please complete the Quick Self-Assessment to evaluate your preparedness.

The comprehensive program, designed to help businesses prepare for interruptions of all kinds, consists of three main components:  a disaster planning folder, a guide and a planning toolkit that can be downloaded below.

  • The Open for BusinessTM Disaster Plan Folder contains planning advice and is designed to hold important papers such as leases, insurance policies and contact lists.
  • The Open for BusinessTM Getting Back to Business Guide provides step-by-step instructions to help business owners assess damage, file insurance claims, and ultimately return to business.
  • The Open for BusinessTM Toolkit contains helpful information, checklists and forms to help business owners both reduce the potential for loss, and reopen quickly.
