Free Family Fun!!
Activities will begin in front of City Hall, near the statue of Galt, at 11:30 a.m. with the raising of the "John Galt Flag". Residents are encouraged to come dressed in period costume.
Then a parade will follow around noon to John Galt Park by the River Run Centre. There will be canoe races, entertainment, old fashioned games, historical caboose, demonstrations and displays. This is an opportunity for families who are in the city for the Civic Holiday weekend in August to participate in a free community event. Bring a picnic to the park and enjoy the planned activities.
John Galt was a prominent Scottish novelist who was known throughout the world who made Guelph a special and distinctive place. As the superintendent of a large land company in London, the Canada Company, he conceived the idea of building a town to stimulate and direct the agricultural settlement of the area. Galt determined the cultural character of the early community by emphasizing the building of churches and a school, and organizing an agricultural fair to promote the community's role in advancing local agriculture.
